Adeline, the eldest of six daughters, is forced to leave behind everything she knows to journey to the heart of the kingdom in search of a means to save her father’s struggling farm. She secures a position at the estate of the mysterious Duke of Hixe, Theis, an offbeat man who shuns society and keeps his face hidden.
She finds it challenging to keep up with the duke’s many demands, but is determined to send only good word home. The duke realizes a fault—she knows nothing about being a maid, making it easy to send her packing.
She is determined to stay and work out his mystery, but instead, she discovers the duke is not as bad as he seems. They develop an attachment—one that must not be pursued. Both are torn: one’s duty to the upkeep of her family and the other to the inhabitants of the kingdom. Will they follow the whispers of their hearts or crumble under the weight of duty?
